New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached out to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday to evaluate the emerging flood conditions across various regions of the state, according to official statements. During the conversation, Shah inquired about the scale of destruction triggered by overflowing rivers and affirmed that the central government is fully prepared to provide necessary logistical and relief assistance to manage the crisis.
Thousands Displaced in Dhemaji
Data provided by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reveals that the deluge has heavily impacted nearly 16,000 residents across 69 villages, spanning four distinct revenue circles within the Dhemaji district.
Addressing the situation on Sunday via a social media post on X, Chief Minister Sarma stated that he has been systematically tracking the developments in Dhemaji since the onset of the flooding. Expressing solidarity with those affected, Sarma emphasized that the state government is deploying every available asset to secure immediate safety and establish sustainable long-term rehabilitation strategies for the displaced families.
Infrastructure and Rail Networks Hit
The adverse weather has also taken a toll on local infrastructure. A representative from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed that train operations had to be suspended on the rail line connecting Archipathar and Simen Chapari in Dhemaji due to heavy flooding and severe bank erosion near a critical railway bridge.
According to an official statement released by the NFR on Sunday, the bridge in question—originally built in 1965 and later updated to broad gauge—was structurally sound prior to the deluge. However, intense rainfall caused a significant portion of the adjacent riverbank to wash away, compromising the stability of one of its foundation piers and forcing the suspension of services.
