Kerala Family Goes Missing On Moving Day, Found Dead In River After Eviction

Kochi: What was meant to be the beginning of a new chapter for a financially distressed family in Kerala ended in tragedy after a couple and their two children were found dead in the Muvattupuzha River days after they diappeared on the day they were supposed to shift to a new home.

Police suspect the deaths were a case of suicide, although the exact cause will be determined after post-mortem examinations and the completion of the investigation.

Family Vanished Before Moving Into New Home

The family had been living in a rented house near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district but was recently evicted after being unable to pay the rent. Following intervention by local authorities and police, a new place to stay had been arranged for them.

However, on the day officials arrived to help the family move into their new residence, they had already disappeared. Their sudden absence prompted an extensive search operation.

Bodies Recovered From Muvattupuza River

Over the next two days, rescue teams recovered the bodies of the couple and their two children from different stretches of the Muvattupuzha River.

The deceased have been identified as Narayanan (45), his wife Viji (43), who was visually impaired, and their two minor children. Investigators believe prolonged financial distress may have pushed the family to take the extreme step, though all aspects of the case are still under investigation.

Financial Hardship at the Centre of Investigation

According to police, the family had struggled with severe financial difficulties for several months. After losing their rented accommodation, they were left without stable housing until authorities stepped in to arrange an alternative residence.

Investigators are examining whether mounting debt, unemployment and prolonged economic hardship contributed to the tragedy. Officials have said the final findings will depend on forensic evidence and post mortem reports.

Tragedy Sparks Concern Over Support for Vulnerable Families

The incident has triggered widespread grief across Kerala and renewed debate over the need for stronger social support systems for families facing homelessness, disability and financial distress.

The fact that the tragedy unfolded on the very day the family was expected to move into a safer home has raised questions about whether additional mental health and financial assistance could have prevented the loss.

Police have registered a case and continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the deaths.
