New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday introduced the Land Port Management System (LPMS), named ‘Vinimay’, a digital platform developed to modernise the functioning of India’s land ports and improve coordination among border agencies.
According to officials, the platform has been designed to simplify cargo and passenger movement while enhancing border security and trade operations across the country’s international land borders. The announcement was reported by Financial Express.
Shah Highlights Role of Land Ports in Security and Trade
While addressing the inauguration event, Amit Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision has helped transform land ports into strategic centres that not only strengthen national security but also support seamless international trade.
Shah stated that the concept behind the Land Ports Authority initially emerged from security-related concerns. However, under the Modi government, these ports have evolved into important gateways that facilitate safer and smoother trade operations.
He also noted that land ports are increasingly serving as important connectivity links between neighbouring countries and communities residing near border regions.
Government Focus on Smart Border Infrastructure
Speaking about the impact of improved border infrastructure, Shah said that the development of land ports has contributed to increasing trade activities while helping authorities tackle illegal operations.
He added that efforts are being made to convert unauthorised trade into legal and regulated business activity. The Union minister further mentioned that stronger border infrastructure has also helped address migration-related concerns in border areas.
The government described the LPMS initiative as a significant step toward building a technology-driven smart border management framework aligned with the long-term ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision.
What is the ‘Vinimay’ Platform?
The LPMS ‘Vinimay’ platform is a unified digital system that integrates operations across India’s land ports. Officials said the platform enables secure, real-time exchange of logistics and regulatory data, similar to systems already used at airports and seaports.
The system introduces digital workflows for cargo and passenger handling, including slot booking, online payments, shipment tracking, and single-window clearance services.
Authorities also confirmed that the platform has been linked with major national systems such as ICEGATE, ULIP, and the motor vehicle ecosystem to improve coordination and minimise operational delays.
Officials believe the digital platform will improve transparency, reduce paperwork, and enhance overall efficiency at border checkpoints.
Land Ports Managed by India
At present, the Land Ports Authority of India manages 15 land ports situated along India’s international borders.
These include Attari and Dera Baba Nanak on the India-Pakistan border; Raxaul, Jogbani, and Rupaidiha on the India-Nepal border; Darranga on the India-Bhutan border; Petrapole, Dawki, Sutarkandi, Golakganj, and Mankachar along the India-Bangladesh border; Agartala, Srimantapur, and Sabroom in Tripura; and Moreh on the India-Myanmar border.
