Sarnath, an ancient Buddhist temple in Uttar Pradesh, India, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on Saturday.
The decision was made during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which is now in session in Busan, South Korea.
UNESCO wrote on X, “New inscription on the @UNESCO #WorldHeritage List: Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath, #India.”
This is the 45th location in India to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The place has a strong connection to Lord Buddha, whose everlasting message of knowledge, compassion, and peace inspires the globe, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised the plaque.
Sarnath is closely associated with Lord Buddha, whose eternal teachings of harmony, wisdom, and compassion continue to inspire the globe, according to PM Modi’s social media post. The acknowledgment, he continued, honors India’s rich spiritual and cultural legacy. According to the Prime Minister, the inscription will encourage more people to travel to Sarnath and engage with Lord Buddha’s teachings.
The inscription, according to Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, marks a turning point in India’s cultural history. He claimed that Sarnath is an everlasting symbol of compassion, wisdom, and peace in a social media post. According to him, it illustrates the significant philosophical and spiritual contributions that Indian civilization has made to humanity. “The inscription reaffirms the nation’s enduring role as a cradle of ideas that continue to inspire the world across generations.”

One of the two organizations in charge of the Convention for the Protection of the World’s Cultural and Natural Heritage is the World Heritage Committee.
