New Delhi: A young woman identified as Akriti Sutar, who had married around two and a half months ago, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Delhi, prompting a police investigation. Her family has alleged that she was subjected to harassment over dowry demands after her marriage, adding a serious dimension to the case.
According to information available so far, Akriti had recently married the brother of one of her friends. On the day of the incident, she had reportedly hosted a party for her colleagues before leaving for home. Later, her family received information that she had gone missing. Hours afterward, they were informed that her body had been found, leaving relatives and acquaintances in shock.
Family members have accused Akriti’s in-laws of harassing her for dowry since the marriage and have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation into her death. Their allegations are now being examined as part of the ongoing probe. Police have begun collecting evidence, recording statements of family members and other witnesses, and are awaiting the findings of the post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the death was accidental, suicidal, or homicidal. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including the family’s allegations of dowry related harassment. No final conclusions have been announced, and authorities have urged that the investigation be allowed to proceed based on evidence.
The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns surrounding alleged dowry harassment and the safety of newly married women. Cases involving suspicious deaths within the early months of marriage are treated with particular scrutiny under Indian law, with investigators required to determine whether any criminal offence has been committed.
Further details are expected to emerge as the police investigation progresses and forensic reports become available. Authorities have not released additional official information beyond the ongoing inquiry.
