Delhi: Air India has decided to reduce its international flight operations through July 2026 as rising fuel costs and ongoing airspace restrictions continue to impact profitability, according to a report by LiveMint, citing inputs from news agency PTI. The airline’s management confirmed that several overseas routes have become financially unviable under current conditions.
As reported by LiveMint, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Campbell Wilson informed employees that the airline had already cut back some international services in April and May. However, the situation has worsened due to a sharp increase in jet fuel prices combined with geopolitical disruptions, particularly in West Asia, which have led to airspace closures.
These restrictions have forced flights to take longer routes, significantly increasing fuel consumption and operational costs. The additional burden has pushed multiple international routes into loss-making territory, leaving the airline with limited options. Wilson described the circumstances as extremely challenging, noting that the company would need to further trim schedules in June and July.
The report highlights that Air India is already dealing with substantial financial strain, with estimated losses exceeding ₹22,000 crore for the financial year ending March 31, 2026. The latest decision is expected to affect passengers through reduced flight options and possible disruptions to travel plans.
Wilson acknowledged the inconvenience caused to both customers and airline staff, expressing regret over the impact on schedules. He also indicated hope that geopolitical tensions ease soon, allowing flight operations to return to normal levels.
The LiveMint article underscores that the airline’s efforts to rebuild and expand its network have been hindered by external pressures, including volatile fuel prices and regional conflicts. Until conditions stabilise, Air India is likely to continue prioritising cost management and operational efficiency over expansion.
