New Delhi: Air India has launched a new “Basic” fare category for Economy Class passengers travelling on select domestic routes, offering a lower-priced travel option aimed at budget-conscious flyers. The airline said the move is intended to give customers more flexibility in choosing services based on their travel needs.
Designed for Price-Conscious Travellers
According to Air India, the newly introduced Basic fare is an optional category tailored for passengers who prefer a more unbundled travel experience. The airline stated that the fare has been created for travellers looking to reduce costs while retaining essential baggage benefits.
Passengers booking under this category will receive a 15 kg checked baggage allowance and a 7 kg cabin baggage allowance. However, complimentary meals, which are typically included in Air India’s full-service offering, will not be part of the Basic fare package.
Existing Fare Categories Remain Available
Air India clarified that the introduction of the Basic fare does not replace its existing fare options. Travellers will continue to have access to the airline’s Value, Classic and Flex fare categories, all of which include complimentary meals and additional bundled benefits.

The airline said the new category simply adds another option for customers who may not require all the services included in traditional fare bundles.
Meal Purchase Option Still Available
Although complimentary meals are excluded from the Basic fare, passengers will still be able to pre-book meals up to 24 hours before departure. Available meal choices include vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain and diabetic options.
Air India also noted that if a flight schedule changes or passengers are re-accommodated on another service, any pre-purchased meals will either be transferred automatically to the new flight or refunded if the meal service is unavailable.
Pilot Rollout on Selected Routes
The Basic fare has currently been introduced on a trial basis across select domestic routes. Air India said it will review passenger feedback and customer response during the pilot phase before making decisions on the future expansion of the offering.
At present, the fare can be booked through Air India’s direct channels, including its official website, mobile application, contact centre and airport ticketing offices.
Move Aims to Expand Customer Choice
In its statement, Air India said the introduction of the Basic fare reflects its effort to provide travellers with greater control over how they travel and what they pay for. The airline described the initiative as part of its broader strategy to offer more personalised and flexible travel options while maintaining full-service alternatives for passengers who prefer an all-inclusive experience.
