A routine international flight turned chaotic at Chennai Airport after a passenger opened an emergency exit and leapt from the aircraft while it was still taxiing.
The incident occurred early Sunday on an Air Arabia flight arriving from Sharjah. The aircraft had already landed and was moving slowly along a taxiway after exiting the main runway when the passenger suddenly opened the emergency exit door and jumped out, triggering panic among those on board.
Airport officials confirmed that the aircraft was not on the main runway at the time of the incident. A senior officer stated that the plane was moving at low speed and that there was no damage to the aircraft or injuries to passengers and crew.
Preliminary findings suggest that the individual may have been unwell during the journey. Officials told that the passenger had complained of nausea and is believed to have vomited twice while on board, which may have contributed to his actions.
Following the incident, the pilot immediately alerted ground authorities. Personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) responded promptly, secured the passenger, and handed him over to local police for further investigation.

The episode led to a temporary disruption of airport operations. As a precautionary measure, the main runway at Chennai Airport was shut for approximately one hour, between 3:23 am and 4:23 am, with incoming flights diverted to a secondary runway during that period.
Authorities have launched an inquiry into the breach of aviation safety protocols. While the identity of the passenger has not been officially confirmed, unverified reports cited indicate he may be from Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai district.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, officials reiterated that there were no casualties and no structural damage to the aircraft. The investigation is ongoing.
