
Kolkata: A predawn police search at Trinamool Congress Leader Abhishek Banerjee’s Kalighat residence triggered high political drama on Saturday, with the TMC national general seceratary questioning the action and asking, ” Am I hiding anything ?” as party cheif Mamta Banerjee rushed to stand by her nephew.
The search, conducted by Kolkata Police and Paschim Medinipur Police with central force support, lasted for over four hours. Officials said the operation was linked to an investigation involving Abhishek’s aide Sumit Roy, while police sources described it as part of an ongoing probe into alleged financial irregularities.
As news of the operation sperad, Mamta Banerjee reached the residence and remained there for some time as TMC workers gathered outside. No official word was immediately available on whether any documents or materials were seized.
The development comes at a time when pressure is mounting on Abhishek Banerjee from multiple fronts. Just two days ago, he was questioned for more than five hours by the CID in the alleged MLA signature forgery case and has since recieved fresh summonses in seperate investigations. The Enforcement Directorate has also asked him to appear in connection with the teachers recruitement scam probe.
Defending himself, Abhishek maintained that he has cooperated with every investigating agency and accused authorities of selectively targeting him. Saturday’s search is likely to further intensify the political showdown between the ruling TMC and investigating agencies in West Bengal.
