Surat Nasirnagar Mega Demolition: Government Admits in Court That Encroachments Were Demolished Without Any Authority’s Approval

Surat: Surat Nasirnagar Demolition Case: In the ghost demolition in Surat’s Nasirnagar, the government has admitted in court that the encroachments were demolished without the approval of any authority. On the matter, the power company stated that it had received no written instruction, only a telephonic one. “By the time we reached the spot, 10 to 15 houses had already been demolished, and our electricity meters were damaged as well,” the company said.

High Court takes Corporation to task over the demolition

On the other hand, the High Court came down heavily on the Corporation, questioning what the Corporation’s officials were doing while such a large-scale demolition was taking place. “Your commissioner gives Torrent a telephonic instruction! How can you demolish people’s homes without following due legal process?” the court asked.

Inquiry ordered — or just a drama?

The government too admitted in court that these encroachments were demolished unlawfully, and that an inquiry into the matter has already been initiated. The government conceded that when around 150 houses were being demolished, senior officials of the Corporation, police officials, and Torrent’s officials were all present at the site and that they merely stood by watching the spectacle.
