Surat Elderly Man Suffering From Chest Pain Carried On Stretcher Through Chest-Deep Water

Surat: Surat has been battered by relentless rain over the past three days, causing severe waterlogging and creating flood-like conditions across the city. A staggering 17 inches of rain was recorded within just 30 hours, from 6 AM on June 23 to noon on June 24. As a result, several parts of the city are submerged, with knee to chest-deep water reported in various areas, including Limbayat, Parvat Patiya, Sarthana, Godadara, Bhatar, and the worst-hit Sania Hemad.
Among those affected was an elderly resident of Limbayat, Rehman, who experienced sudden chest pain and faced great difficulties to receive timely medical attention due to the inundated roads. The fire department couldn’t reach his residence, and though a 108 emergency ambulance arrived promptly, it too could not access the house due to the overflowing streets and khadi waters. With no rescue boats available, teams and locals carried Rehman on a stretcher through chest-high water, taking 30 minutes to reach the ambulance.

The unrelenting rain has also caused massive disruptions across the city. In areas like Parvat Patiya, over a kilometer of road is submerged under knee-deep water, making it nearly impossible for vehicles and pedestrians to pass. Many residents are resorting to pedal rickshaws to wade through the flooded streets, paying up to ₹100 just to exit their neighborhoods. Numerous vehicles have stalled in the waterlogged roads, adding to the chaos.
Residents have strongly criticized the city administration for failing to manage water drainage effectively. Many were especially frustrated to see no improvement in conditions despite a visit by the municipal commissioner to the affected areas just a day prior. The ongoing situation has sparked anger and resentment among citizens, who are demanding immediate action and accountability from local authorities.
