Surat Congress Accuses Police of Bias After BJP Burns Effigies of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi

The Surat Congress has accused city police of favoritism, claiming no action was taken against BJP members who burned effigies of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi on April 17. The local Congress unit submitted an official complaint to Surat’s Police Commissioner, highlighting what they see as unequal treatment by law enforcement.
In their memorandum, Congress officials noted that Surat police regularly take strict action against Congress party members and leaders whenever they organize protests or events critical of government policies. However, they allege that when BJP organizes similar events without required permissions, the police fail to act and even provide protection instead.
Surat City Congress President Dhansukh Rajput specifically pointed out the April 17 incident, asserting that BJP activists approached within 50 feet of the Congress office to burn effigies of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, yet the police took no action. Rajput emphasized that had Congress members conducted a similar demonstration, immediate arrests and charges would have followed.
The Congress leadership has demanded immediate legal action and arrests for those involved in the effigy-burning incident, accusing local authorities of consistently enforcing a biased approach toward political events.
