Ahmedabad: Air pollution across the country is claiming thousands of lives. In major cities across Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, air pollution is deteriorating to such an extent that cases of asthma and other respiratory diseases are increasing daily. Despite spending over Rs 900 crore on this issue, Gujarat has failed to achieve clean air. Experts have expressed concern that if the current situation persists, Gujarat could face Delhi-like conditions.
Ahmedabad’s Air Turns Toxic: PM 2.5 at Dangerous Levels
The air in metro cities like Ahmedabad is becoming increasingly poisonous. PM 2.5 refers to extremely fine airborne particles that reach the lungs immediately upon breathing. These toxic particles can prove hazardous for patients suffering from tuberculosis, respiratory illnesses, and heart disease. Over the past several days, the Air Quality Index has been crossing the 100 mark, causing air quality to drop to very poor levels. Doctors advise that in such conditions, it is advisable for people not to venture outdoors.
Ahmedabad’s Air Quality Drops to Poor Levels During Winter
The Gujarat Pollution Control Board also monitors air quality. Some time ago, screen boards were installed in Ahmedabad city to display air quality information, but these are no longer visible. With winter’s gradual arrival, early mornings see such dense fog that not only driving vehicles but even morning walks become difficult. Additionally, air quality deteriorates in the late evening as well.
Rs 957 Crore Spent, Yet Gujarat’s Air Remains Unpurified
Air quality is affected by smoke from industries, factories, and vehicles. The central government allocated a total of Rs 1,282 crore from 2019-20 to 2025-26 to prevent air pollution. The Gujarat government has spent Rs 957 crore so far to control air pollution, yet has not succeeded in purifying the air. The important point is that despite Delhi-like conditions emerging in Gujarat, the government has not paid much attention to air pollution. Additionally, Rs 325 crore remains unused.
