Ahmedabad: As monsoon intensifies across Gujarat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh warnings of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall for the coming days. On July 5, five districts, Bhavnagar, Surat, Tapi, Dang, and Navsari, have been placed under a red alert, signaling the likelihood of very intense rainfall that could potentially lead to flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to daily life. The remaining districts in the state have been placed under an orange alert, where heavy rain is also expected but with a relatively lower level of risk compared to red-alert regions.
This spell of rainfall is expected to continue through the next several days. For July 6 and 7, the IMD has forecast orange alerts for Navsari and Valsad, while yellow alerts, which indicate moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers, have been announced for Amreli, Bhavnagar, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Chhota Udepur, and Dahod districts.
Looking ahead to July 8 through July 10, yellow alerts continue for several districts, with a fresh round of thunderstorms and heavy rain expected. On July 8, areas including Amreli, Bhavnagar, Navsari, Dang, Tapi, Narmada, Valsad, Chhota Udepur, and Dahod are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall. Navsari and Valsad will remain under alert on July 9 as well. By July 10, districts in north and central Gujarat such as Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar, and Dahod are expected to witness thunderstorms and intense downpours.
The IMD’s alerts come amid widespread rainfall already being recorded across the state. In the past 24 hours, 201 talukas reported rain, with some locations experiencing significant accumulation. The highest rainfall was recorded in Palsana (Surat) with 3.7 inches, followed by Kankrej in Banaskantha at 3.5 inches and Lakhtar in Surendranagar at 3.4 inches. Valsad saw 3.23 inches, while Vapi received 3.15 inches. Vav and Kalyanpur talukas each recorded 3.0 inches of rainfall.
Authorities have urged residents, especially in red and orange alert zones, to stay updated with local advisories, avoid waterlogged areas, and remain indoors during periods of intense rainfall. Disaster management teams are on standby as the state braces for what could be a challenging few days of persistent monsoon activity.
