Surat: Heavy rainfall has brought life to a standstill in Surat, as over 13 inches of rain lashed the city between 6 PM on June 23 and 6 AM on June 24. The intense downpour has led to widespread waterlogging and a flood-like situation across various parts of the city, severely affecting early morning commuters and daily life. Between 6 AM and 8 PM on Monday, the city recorded 9.53 inches of rainfall, the highest two-hour downpour in 40 years.
Streets have turned into rivers, submerging vehicles and disrupting traffic. Major roads, especially those along the Tapi River, have been shut down due to water accumulation. In many low-lying areas, including Punagam and Parvat village road, knee-deep water has been reported. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Surat and surrounding districts including Vadodara, Tapi, Narmada, and Navsari until 10 AM.
Several other regions, such as Anand, Bhavnagar, Dahod, Panchmahal, Chhota Udepur, Valsad, Dang, Junagadh, Amreli, Botad, Gir Somnath, and the Union Territories of Diu, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, are under an Orange Alert. A Yellow Alert has been issued for the remaining parts of Gujarat, where moderate rainfall is expected.

On June 23, Surat witnessed a cloudburst-like situation, triggering a deluge that led to schools being closed and residents stranded. Bharuch also experienced intense rain, resulting in flooded streets and stalled vehicles. Kamrej recorded 7 inches of rainfall, and rising water levels have been reported in the Shetrunji and Satladi rivers in Amreli.
Municipal Commissioner of Surat is closely monitoring the situation from the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). City officials have been instructed to act immediately and take necessary steps to manage the crisis and minimize disruption. With rains showing no sign of stopping, authorities urge citizens to stay indoors, avoid flooded areas, and follow updates from local administration and emergency services.
