Ahmedabad: Heavy vehicles will be prohibited from passing over 16 old overbridges located in Ahmedabad city. To prevent heavy vehicles from crossing these bridges, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will install restricted height barriers. At an estimated cost of Rs 2.49 crore, barriers will be erected on all 16 bridges, ensuring that heavy and overloaded vehicles cannot pass through. Additionally, informatory signboards displaying the design capacity and load-bearing capability will be installed on other bridges.

Decision To Install Restricted Height Barriers On 16 Overbridges To Prevent Heavy Vehicle Movement

Following the Morbi hanging bridge and Vadodara’s Gambhira Bridge accidents in the state, the load-bearing capacity of every bridge for vehicle movement was also inspected. After the Gambhira Bridge disaster in Vadodara, the alert Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation administration has decided to install restricted height barriers on approximately 16 overbridges in the city ranging from 100 years to 24 years old to prevent heavy vehicles from crossing.

Heavy Vehicles Will Not Be Able To Cross These Bridges

After the Morbi hanging bridge and Gambhira Bridge tragedies, the Gujarat High Court and the state government issued instructions to install informatory signboards on all bridges across the state, displaying design capacity and load-bearing capability. The Municipal Commissioner also directed during a project review meeting that tender processes should be initiated to install restricted height barriers on old bridges in the city. Consequently, heavy vehicles will no longer be able to pass over these bridges.

Though Subhash Bridge was closed due to cracks, many more bridges are in line to be shut down. In July 2025, bridge consultant Pankaj M. The bridge consultant’s inspection report mentioned defects in several city bridges and highlighted the need for repairs.

Following the Subhash Bridge incident, opposition leader Shehzad Khan Pathan made this report public. Divya Bhaskar analyzed this report covering 69 bridges that were inspected, revealing details of four critically damaged bridges.

With Subhash Bridge closed, the Parikshitlal Majumdar Bridge located in the Vadaj area of the city—which now experiences the highest increase in vehicular traffic—has also been mentioned as having defects. Despite reports recommending demolition and reconstruction, authorities seem to be waiting for an accident to occur rather than undertaking repairs. The Gurujee Overbridge, which was inaugurated in 2009 by the then Chief Minister and current Prime Minister Modi, has a subsided road surface with visible cracks.
