Ahmedabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall and strong winds across Gujarat for the next seven days. A weather alert has been issued for several districts, with residents urged to stay cautious. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until June 28 due to dangerous sea conditions.

Red Alert Issued for Southern Gujarat

The IMD has issued a red alert for several districts in South Gujarat, including Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Dahod, Bharuch, and Narmada. These areas are expected to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, which could potentially disrupt daily life and cause localized flooding.

Orange Alert for Central and Northern Districts

An orange alert has been declared for Sabarkantha, Amreli, Jamnagar, Aravalli, Kheda, Gandhinagar, Anand, Panchmahal, and Chhota Udepur. Additionally, specific rainfall alerts have been outlined:

Heavy rains very likely at isolated places in the districts of Gujarat region namely Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana and Ahmedabad; in the districts of Saurashtra- Kutch namely Surendranagar,
Rajkot, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Botad and in Diu.

Winds are expected to reach speeds of up to 40 km/h, posing additional hazards alongside the heavy rains. The IMD has reiterated its warning for fishermen to stay away from the sea until June 28, citing the increased risk of strong currents and hazardous sea conditions. According to the State Emergency Operations Center in Gandhinagar, Gujarat has received 21% of its average seasonal rainfall so far. Saurashtra has recorded the highest rainfall with 26.33% of the average already received.

Due to the heavy rains, many of the state’s reservoirs have seen significant water inflow. 11 dams are now at full capacity and 27 dams are more than 70% full. Currently, 15 dams are under high alert, 12 are on alert, and 11 are in warning status.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents in affected areas to follow safety advisories and remain alert to changing weather conditions. “People are advised to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and be ready to move to safer places accordingly,” IMD has stated.
