Heavy Rain Batters Banaskantha In Gujarat; IMD Issues Fresh Alerts Across Multiple Districts

Ahmedabad: Over the past 24 hours, widespread rainfall has drenched Gujarat, with 121 talukas receiving showers since 6 AM yesterday. While the state had been witnessing scattered rainfall in recent days, the situation intensified with heavy downpours, particularly in Banaskantha district, which is among the worst-hit areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued rainfall across Gujarat through July 16, and alerts have been issued for several districts.
The district of Banaskantha has been experiencing relentless rainfall since early morning. Dantiwada recorded the highest in the state with 6.30 inches of rain. Other towns in the region also received considerable rainfall, including Palanpur with 4.56 inches, Deesa with 3.66 inches, Danta with 3.07 inches, and Vadgam with 2.52 inches. As a result, large parts of the district are facing waterlogging and flood-like conditions.
In Palanpur, streets and low-lying areas were submerged, and the situation on the Abu-Ahmedabad highway worsened due to heavy water accumulation, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill and stranding commuters. Danta in Banaskantha has recorded 3.19 inches from 6 AM to 12 PM today.
Rainfall wasn’t limited to Banaskantha alone. In Patan, a heavy downpour led to flooding in railway underpasses, creating significant difficulties for local residents and travelers. Meanwhile, in the Savarkundla taluka of Amreli district, a sudden cloudburst near Bhamodra village caused river levels to surge, leading to a flash flood situation. A mini tractor was swept away in the rising waters, though emergency services were able to rescue it successfully.
The IMD has responded by upgrading weather alerts in several districts. An orange alert, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall, has been issued for Aravalli and Mahisagar. A yellow alert has been declared in Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Kheda, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Amreli, and Bhavnagar, warning residents to remain cautious amid ongoing heavy rain forecasts.
According to the IMD’s extended forecast, Gujarat will continue to experience intense rainfall for the next few days. On July 13 and 14, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across the Gujarat region, while Saurashtra will see heavy showers. On July 15 and 16, the Gujarat region will likely receive heavy rainfall again, with light to moderate showers forecasted for Saurashtra. After that, lighter rainfall is expected to persist across the state for another couple of days.
