Gujarat’s Mahi Bhatt Becomes Sole Qualifier for NASA Junior Scientist Program

AHMEDABAD: Mahi Bhatt, a 14-year-old from Ahmedabad, has made her city and state proud by becoming the only student from Gujarat to qualify for the prestigious junior scientist program at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A resident of Vastral and a Class 9 student at Sharadaba Education Campus, her achievement marks a significant milestone in a year filled with academic success.

A Year of Remarkable Feats

Mahi’s selection by NASA is the culmination of an extraordinary year. She successfully cleared challenging examinations not only from NASA but also from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) through its IIRS Outreach Program, the Euro Space Academy, and UNO Space, demonstrating her exceptional aptitude for science and technology.

Inspired by Indian-American astronauts, Mahi shared her motivation. “Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams, who ventured into space, are my role models,” she said. Her passion for science was nurtured from a young age. “My father used to bring me science books, which sparked my curiosity and deepened my love for the subject. I have actively participated in school-level science fairs, and several of my projects were selected at zonal and city levels.”

Coming from a middle-class background, Mahi expressed deep gratitude for her support system, crediting her teachers and school principal for their unwavering encouragement.

Groundbreaking School Project

Earlier this year, Mahi’s scientific talent was on full display at the Maths and Science Exhibition organized by AMC’s English Zone schools. She and a teammate developed an innovative project on Hydroponics using the Fountain Method, which focused on sustainable agriculture by preventing water wastage and enabling its efficient reuse after purification.

“This project boosted my confidence and inspired me to dream bigger in the field of science,” she reflected.

Aspiring Rocket Scientist

With her eyes set on the future, Mahi aims to contribute to her country’s advancements in space exploration. “India has made remarkable progress in space research. I aspire to study Rocket Science and contribute to this field,” she stated with determination.

Her success is a product of immense dedication. “I used to study 8 to 10 hours a day to prepare for these exams, and that dedication helped me achieve success,” Mahi explained. Looking ahead, she hopes to pay it forward, adding, “I want to guide other students and inspire them to take an interest in science just as I did.”
