
Ahmedabad: Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has been confirmed among the 241 victims of the devastating Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi announced. Due to the severe burns sustained by all victims, identification was only possible through DNA analysis. After nearly 3 days, Rupani’s DNA matched earlier today at approximately 11:10 AM.
Rupani’s mortal remains will be brought to his residence in Rajkot by this evening. According to officials, preparations for his final rites have already begun at his home in Prakash Society, Rajkot. His family, along with senior BJP leaders, are expected to make final arrangements following a meeting scheduled for 1 PM.
Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi stated during a press briefing: “Our respected leader Vijaybhai Rupani tragically lost his life in the Air India Ahmedabad crash. He dedicated his life to social service across Gujarat. His DNA match was confirmed this morning around 11: 10 AM.”
At a media briefing, Civil Hospital Additional Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel confirmed that so far, DNA samples of 31 victims have been successfully matched, and 12 bodies have been handed over to their families.
In Rajkot, preparations are underway at Rupani’s residence for a public viewing ahead of the last rites. Amidst the confirmation of his death, Union Minister Parshottam Rupala visited Rupani’s family home in Gandhinagar to offer condolences.
Rupani, a senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister of Gujarat (2016–2021), was widely respected for his calm demeanor and decades-long service to the state. His untimely death has left a deep void in Gujarat’s political and social landscape.
