Ahmedabad: The cruise service at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad has restarted after a gap of nearly four months. The decision came soon after the opposition accused authorities of letting most riverfront projects fail. Online booking facilities for the cruise are now available, and for the first time, Janmashtami will be celebrated on board, complete with a “Matki Phod” event. A café service will also operate during the special celebration, running from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m.
Service Was Halted for Three to Four Months
The cruise operations had been halted months ago when water was released from the Sabarmati River to clean it, causing the water level to drop. Due to low water levels and resulting technical issues, the service remained shut for around three to four months, causing the operating company an estimated loss of ₹3–3.5 crore. Sources indicate that the service provider had sought the government’s cooperation to address these technical challenges and even requested a waiver of the fixed monthly rent to cope with financial pressures.
Features of the Cruise
Built entirely in India, the cruise offers both comfort and safety to passengers. Measuring 30 meters in length and 10 meters in width, it comes equipped with facilities like dining and live music while adhering to fire safety standards. The floating restaurant has two seating decks the lower deck, fully covered in glass and centrally air-conditioned, and the upper deck for open-air dining.
A kitchen is located at the rear of the vessel. Amenities include televisions, projectors, lighting, sound systems, and life-saving equipment. Dining tables are arranged so passengers can enjoy meals while taking in views of the Sabarmati River from both sides. The upper deck also offers dining space for those who prefer open-air seating.
