Ahmedabad Diwali: 254 fire calls in 6 days; 1 dead, multiple burn injuries treated across civic hospitals

Ahmedabad saw a surge in fire-related emergencies during Diwali, with the city fire control room receiving over 250 calls between October 18 and 23, averaging around 50 calls a day. The festive period turned tragic as one person died after being rescued from a blaze and declared dead on arrival at L G Hospital.

Fire dept received 254 calls
With all leaves cancelled, the Ahmedabad Fire Department operated on full alert through the festival. From October 18 to the night of October 23, the control room logged 254 calls, with roughly 130 incidents linked to garbage fires sparked by firecrackers. The tally included 40 house fires, 19 shop fires, and 13 vehicle fires. Twelve factory fires were reported, including one at Riddhi Steel that left two people burned one treated as an outpatient at L G Hospital, while the other was declared dead on arrival. The brigade also responded to four godown fires, 17 tree fires, and several smaller incidents at banks, wooden stalls, hotels, bakeries, electricity meters, DP boxes, and slum clusters.

Over 40 people treated for firecracker burns
The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had set up special arrangements at civic hospitals for cracker-related injuries. L G Hospital treated more than 20 patients and admitted over three to indoor wards. SVP Hospital reported no admissions, while Nagari Hospital treated over 15 outpatients and admitted two. V S Hospital handled over five burn cases.
