Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad’s Asarwa Civil Hospital has announced the successful first-month operation of its newly established Human Milk Bank, a initiative that provided vital nutrition to hundreds of newborns.
In its initial 30 days, the facility collected a significant 153.95 litres of breast milk, donated by approximately 294 mothers. This life-saving resource benefited more than 258 newborn infants, according to hospital data.
The bank currently maintains a reserve of 14.5 litres of pasteurised milk and 7.8 litres of unpasteurised milk. Medical professionals at the hospital noted that the service offers dual benefits: it provides relief to mothers experiencing discomfort from milk oversupply while ensuring optimal nutrition for vulnerable newborns who cannot breastfeed directly.
Of the 258 infants who received milk, 243 were fed their own mother’s milk extracted at the facility. The remaining 15 babies received milk from donor mothers.
Dr. Vaishnav, head of the hospital’s paediatric department, provided a breakdown of the recipients, confirming that 170 newborns were from the hospital’s neonatal ICU and 88 from the Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) ward, all of whom benefited from the bank’s services.
