Monterrey (Mexico): Sweden’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Tunisia in the FIFA World Cup on Sunday produced a memorable moment when Swedish midfielder Yasin Ayari became emotional after scoring the team’s opening goal.
Ayari scored twice in the match. His first goal came in the seventh minute, while his second arrived in stoppage time (96th minute) after the end of regulation. Normally, footballers celebrate wildly after finding the net, but Ayari reacted very differently after his first goal. Instead of celebrating, he simply raised his hand in a gesture of apology.
The apology was directed towards Tunisia, the homeland of his father. Although Ayari was born and raised in Sweden, his father is Tunisian. Since Sweden was playing against Tunisia, the midfielder chose not to celebrate and instead expressed respect for his father’s native country after scoring.
During his youth career, Ayari had received an opportunity to represent Tunisia internationally. However, he declined the offer and continued playing for Sweden, the country where he was born and brought up.
Ayari’s father, Azouz Ayari, had previously explained the decision in an interview. He said: “I told Yasin that he grew up in Sweden, so he should repay that country by representing Sweden.”
The emotional gesture after the goal highlighted Ayari’s deep connection to both nations and earned praise from football fans for showing respect to his family’s roots while representing his adopted footballing nation on the world’s biggest stage.
