Portugal Crush Uzbekistan 5-0
Houston : Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Portugal thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0 in the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night. It was a record-breaking performance from Ronaldo, who became the first player in world football to score in all six World Cups he has played.
Argentina superstar Lionel Messi has also appeared in six World Cups, but unlike Ronaldo, he has not scored in every edition. Messi failed to score a single goal during the 2010 World Cup, whereas Ronaldo has found the net at least once in each of his six World Cup campaigns.
During the post-match press conference on Tuesday night, journalists praised Ronaldo’s outstanding display against Uzbekistan. However, when one reporter mentioned Messi while asking a question, Ronaldo appeared irritated. He responded with “Next question, please…” before turning to another journalist.

Portugal’s previous match against DR Congo had ended in a 1-1 draw last Wednesday, with Ronaldo failing to score. On Tuesday, however, he gave Portugal a dream start by finding the net in the sixth minute. Thousands of fans inside the Houston stadium erupted in celebration after witnessing his record-breaking goal. Messi has scored five goals in this World Cup, while this was Ronaldo’s first goal of the tournament. Ronaldo is generally not fond of comparisons with Messi, which is why he chose not to answer the question related to the Argentine star.
After Ronaldo’s opener, Mendes doubled Portugal’s lead in the 17th minute to make it 2-0. Ronaldo struck again in the 39th minute. Portugal’s fourth goal came in the 60th minute through an own goal by Uzbekistan’s Nematov, while Rafael Leao added the fifth in the 87th minute to complete the 5-0 victory.
Portugal are now on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stage. Their only remaining group-stage match is against Colombia.
Ronaldo Becomes Portugal’s Leading World Cup Scorer
The 41-year-old Ronaldo, who wears the iconic No. 7 jersey, now has 10 goals in World Cup history. With that tally, he has become Portugal’s highest goal-scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
“I’m Back”: Ronaldo
After the match against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo looked directly into the television cameras and repeatedly declared, “I’m back… I’m back.”
Asked about the statement, Ronaldo said, “I said that so people don’t forget me. Last week was very difficult. At one point, I felt as though I had already retired. But, as always, I never lost courage and have returned to performing at my best. I value my work more than anything else.”

My Aim Is to Help the Team Achieve Its Goal: Ronaldo
After Ronaldo ignored the Messi-related question, another journalist sought permission to ask a question. Ronaldo replied, “That depends on what your question is. Otherwise, I won’t answer. Yes, I do enjoy breaking records, but my only objective is to help my team achieve its goals.”
