Kansas: World football icon Lionel Messi achieved another remarkable milestone today. Not only did Messi become the first player in history to feature in six FIFA World Cups, but he also played in a World Cup that included the son of legendary French footballer Zinedine Zidane, 20 years after competing alongside Zidane himself. Messi made his FIFA World Cup debut in 2006.
In addition to the unique achievement of facing Zidane’s son, Messi defeated him three times by scoring a hat-trick. Luca Zidane, though French by nationality, is representing Algeria as the team’s goalkeeper at this World Cup. Zinedine Zidane, one of France’s greatest-ever footballers, made his final World Cup appearance in 2006.
Messi was the player Algeria feared the most, and he justified that reputation by scoring all three goals in Argentina’s 3-0 victory. The Argentine legend found the net in the 17th, 60th and 76th minutes.
Zinedine Zidane, a World Cup winner with France, watched the match from the VIP box as his son took the field. However, Luca Zidane was beaten three times by Messi, who once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history.
Messi’s three goals against Luca Zidane helped Argentina begin their FIFA World Cup campaign with an emphatic 3-0 win over Algeria.
