New York : Among the five FIFA World Cup matches played after midnight on Thursday, the clash between Germany and Ecuador turned out to be the most thrilling and produced a major upset. Germany, ranked 10th in the FIFA rankings, suffered a 1-2 defeat against 23rd-ranked Ecuador. This match will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Ecuador staged a remarkable comeback in front of 80,663 spectators to defeat the European giants.
Former champions Germany had already secured a place in the knockout stage as Group E table-toppers a few days earlier, but Thursday night’s defeat left them embarrassed. Leroy Sane gave Germany a dream start by scoring in just the second minute to make it 1-0. However, Ecuador arrived determined to challenge the Germans and equalized in the ninth minute through Nilson Angulo. It was Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament.

After the score was level at 1-1, both teams continued to battle fiercely. In the 77th minute, Gonzalo Plata broke through Germany’s defense and scored what proved to be the winning goal.
