Philadelphia: Tempers flared during the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash between former champions France and Paraguay in sweltering 110°F (43°C) conditions early Sunday (IST), with players from both teams involved in several heated confrontations. Paraguay’s players appeared to single out French superstar Kylian Mbappe throughout the match, making this one of the most controversial fixtures in World Cup history.
Tensions Boil Over in Extreme Heat
The match produced just one goal. France were awarded a penalty after a serious foul by a Paraguay player inside the penalty area, and Mbappe converted the spot-kick in the 70th minute to hand his team a 1-0 victory.
The intense heat only added to the tempers on the field, with repeated clashes breaking out between the players. France eventually survived one of the toughest tests in their FIFA World Cup history to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
After the final whistle, Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill sportingly extended his hand to congratulate Mbappe. However, the French forward ignored the gesture, prompting Gill to lightly throw the ball at Mbappe’s back as the players walked off the field.
What Mbappe Said After the Match
At one stage, Paraguay’s Andres Cubas and Mbappe were involved in a heated altercation, with both players shoving each other. The atmosphere became even more charged after France scored from the penalty spot.
Later, Paraguay’s Matias Galarza brought Mbappe down with a blow from his right elbow. In another incident, players from both teams exchanged pushes as tempers continued to flare.
Speaking after the match about Paraguay’s aggressive approach, Mbappe said, “We knew this was going to be a very tough and potentially controversial match. We also know how to play and win even in dirty games.”
