‘AMinecraft Movie’ scores the highest-ever opening day for a video game adaptation with $58 million — the best of 2025 so far

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s A Minecraft Movie has smashed box office records, earning $157 million domestically in its opening weekend and an impressive $301 million globally. The live-action adaptation of Mojang’s best-selling video game has become the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game movie, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s $146 million debut.
Directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite), the PG-rated adventure stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. The film’s journey to the big screen spanned over a decade, with Legendary joining the project in 2019 and Hess taking the helm in 2022.
Despite initial skepticism about its live-action approach, A Minecraft Movie has captivated audiences with visually stunning effects and a narrative faithful to the game. Marketing campaigns leveraging social media and online trailers have been pivotal in driving ticket sales, with strong walk-up traffic and word-of-mouth bolstering its success.
The film’s opening day earned $58 million, marking the largest single-day debut for a video game adaptation and the biggest opening day of 2025 so far. It now ranks among Warner Bros.’ top domestic debuts, trailing only The Dark Knight ($158M). Globally, it stands as the studio’s seventh-largest opening weekend, behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 ($330M).
Tie-ins such as Minecraft-themed Happy Meals at McDonald’s have further fueled audience enthusiasm. Analysts predict that A Minecraft Movie could reach $500 million domestically and potentially cross the billion-dollar mark globally, thanks to its appeal across demographics and strong family turnout
