Rani Mukerji’s Mother Krishna Mukerji Dies At 75, Family Asks For Privacy

Mumbai: Rani Mukerji is mourning the loss of her mother, Krishna Mukerji, who passed away at the age of 75 on September 22. The family confirmed the news and has asked for privacy as they come to terms with the loss.

Yash Raj Films released a statement on behalf of the family, confirming Krishna Mukerji’s death and thanking friends, fans and well wishers for their support and prayers. The family has not shared the cause of her death.

Krishna Mukerji was known not only as Rani’s mother but also had her own connection with the film industry. She worked as a playback singer and was associated with both Hindi and Bengali cinema. Over the years, she had stayed away from the spotlight for the most part, although she was occasionally seen with Rani at family occasions and public events.

Krishna was married to filmmaker Ram Mukerji, who died in 2017 at the age of 84. Ram was associated with Hindi and Bengali films and was also one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios. The couple had two children, Rani and filmmaker Raja Mukerji.

Rani has often spoken about the important role her parents played in her life and career. Her mother, in particular, remained a close presence as she built her career in Bollywood. Interestingly, Krishna was not immediately convinced that acting was the right choice for her daughter.

In an earlier interview, Rani recalled how her mother reacted after watching her first screen test. Krishna reportedly felt that Rani was not ready to become an actor and even expressed doubts to the producer. Despite those initial concerns, Rani went on to build a successful career and became one of the most recognised actresses in Hindi cinema.

Following the news of Krishna’s passing, several members of the film fraternity visited the Mukerji family to offer their condolences. Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt and Anil Kapoor were among those reported to have paid their respects.

Krishna Mukerji’s last rites were held in Mumbai. The private family gathering came as Rani and her loved ones bid farewell to a woman who had remained an important part of her life, both personally and throughout her journey in films.

As the family grieves, their request is simple to be given some privacy during this difficult time.
