Rajpal Yadav Clears Rs 2.5 Crore Towards Rs 9-Crore Debt: Lawyer

Veteran Bollywood comedian Rajpal Yadav has repaid Rs 2.5 crore in connection with a long-standing cheque bounce and loan default case, his lawyer informed the Delhi High Court. The original principal amount borrowed was Rs 5 crore, but with accumulated interest, penalties, and other charges under the Negotiable Instruments Act, the total liability has risen to approximately Rs 9 crore.

The dispute traces back to 2010, when Yadav secured the loan from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut film Ata Pata Laapata. The project, produced by his wife, failed to draw audiences, resulting in financial difficulties and eventual default on repayment. This led to bounced cheques and multiple legal proceedings.

According to lawyer Bhaskar Upadhyay, the Rs 2.5 crore paid represents half of the original Rs 5 crore principal. Payments have included earlier deposits with the court’s Registrar General, such as two demand drafts of Rs 75 lakh each in October 2025. The lawyer emphasized that negotiations continue and additional funds are being arranged for deposit before the court.

In recent developments, the Delhi High Court, on February 2, directed Yadav to deposit Rs 1.35 crore in each of the seven related cases and ordered the release of previously deposited amounts to the complainant. When Yadav failed to meet these commitments despite prior undertakings, the court rejected his requests for extensions and ordered him to surrender at Tihar Jail on February 5. He has been in custody since then.

During a hearing on Thursday, the court adjourned proceedings on Yadav’s interim bail petition until Monday (February 16), allowing time for the complainant’s response. Upadhyay told the media that he plans to consult his client in jail for further instructions on payments. He noted that while some earlier offers to pay directly to the complainant were discussed, the current approach focuses on court deposits.

The court has repeatedly highlighted Yadav’s failure to honor repeated assurances made over the years, describing the situation as stemming from non-compliance with agreed settlements rather than arbitrary orders.

Yadav, recognized for memorable roles in films like Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Chup Chup Ke, Hungama, Garam Masala, and Waqt: The Race Against Time, continues to face this financial and legal challenge. His manager previously mentioned support from industry figures including Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Sonu Sood.
