Actor Mushtaq Khan, remembered for his supporting and comic roles in Hindi films, has died at the age of 56 following a long fight with lung cancer.
He passed away on Thursday, the news confirmed by Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) president BN Tiwari and All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) president Suresh Shyamlal Gupt.
Speaking to SCREEN, Suresh Shyamlal Gupta said Khan was diagnosed with lung cancer five years ago and had recovered. The illness returned two weeks ago, and he was admitted to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai.
“He passed away less than an hour ago. He was sick since many days. I am trying to get in touch with his family,” BN Tiwari told SCREEN.
His funeral will be held on Friday at the Yari Road Kabristan.
Mushtaq Khan’s Career in Hindi Cinema
Mushtaq Khan debuted on screen with Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai in 1980, going on to build a career of more than four decades. His supporting turns and comic timing made him a familiar face in Hindi cinema.
His filmography includes Aashiqui, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Raja, Hera Pheri, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Jodi No. 1, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Welcome, Wanted and Oh My God!.

He kept working across generations, with more recent appearances in Stree, Badhaai Do, Gadar 2 and Stree 2. His later credits also include Vanvaas, Baby John, Dhoom Dhaam and Jaat. On television, he featured in shows such as Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi.
His Memorable Role in Welcome
One of Mushtaq Khan’s best-remembered performances came in Anees Bazmee’s Welcome (2007). His comic monologue about a fake leg, after being injured by Uday Bhai, became one of the film’s most quoted scenes.
Though his role was a supporting one, his performance stood out in a film crowded with established comic actors and stars, including Akshay Kumar, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.
Khan also played Gul Khan in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001). He returned to the franchise more than two decades later in Gadar 2 in 2023.
