Main Vaapas Aaunga Box Office: Imtiaz Ali’s Film Scripts Rare Comeback, Nets Rs 24.25 Crore In 10 Days

Two weeks after Imtiaz Ali’s film Main Vaapas Aaunga released in theatres, an unusual comeback story has been scripted at the box office. Thanks to positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth publicity, the film has registered a box office trend that’s hard to come by in today’s unpredictable theatrical market.

While Ali’s film featuring Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina and Sharvari earned Rs 5.50 crore in its opening weekend, business has been growing steadily since release. A film’s fate at the box office is typically decided by its first-weekend earnings, and Main Vaapas Aaunga’s opening numbers were considered slow. However, word of mouth kicked in, and the film witnessed a turnaround on its first Monday a day when films usually risk crashing further.

Main Vaapas Aaunga’s Comeback At The Ticket Window

The tide turned within the first week itself. Amplified by favourable reviews and strong social media buzz, the film recorded a surprising rise in footfalls. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, its week-one collection came in at around Rs 12.25 crore.

With trending picking up through the week and reviews pouring in from all quarters, Main Vaapas Aaunga was set up for a strong second weekend. Exhibitors went into overdrive, adding more shows — some starting as early as 6:30 AM. In a rare feat, the film managed to script a smashing comeback, earning nearly as much as its entire first week in just three days.

The second weekend began with Rs 1.90 crore net on Friday, taking a temporary hit due to a bigger commercial challenger releasing the same day Cocktail 2, led by Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. The film picked up pace again on Saturday and Sunday, recording its best individual days yet Rs 4.35 crore on Saturday and Rs 5.75 crore on Sunday, taking the second-weekend total to an estimated Rs 12 crore. That’s a jump of over 100 per cent from its opening weekend, and almost matches the entire total it had accumulated across its first week.
