Khalnayak Returns Teaser Out: Sanjay Dutt Brings Back Ballu Balram After 33 years | Watch

Sanjay Dutt is going back to Ballu Balram The actor confirmed Khalnayak Returns at a press event Friday, unveiling the first look of the sequel to his 1993 film. He’ll reprise the role that made him one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable villains and the story of how this sequel came together is, frankly, hard to make up.

Dutt says the idea came to him in jail. “I used to play songs there, and the most requested one, again and again, was Khal Nayak,” he said, as quoted by DNA. So he asked his fellow inmates if the film were made again, who would watch it? All 4,000 of them said they would. He asked each one to write a page on what the new story should be, read through all 4,000 pages, and when he got out on parole, took the whole thing to Subhash Ghai.

Ghai said it should be made. And so here we are.

The rights have been picked up by Dutt’s production house Three Dimension Motion Pictures, in partnership with Aksha Kamboj’s Aspect Entertainment, from Ghai and his banner Mukta Arts. Ghai directed the original alongside Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff a film that became a cultural reference point well beyond its box-office run.

The teaser suggests a darker read on Ballu, though details about the cast and production are still under wraps. The film hasn’t gone on floors yet.

Dutt was direct about one thing: none of this happens without Ghai. “The journey of Khalnayak has been long and without Subhash ji it wouldn’t have been possible,” he said. “He will be part of this Khalnayak.”

This follows his well-received turn in Dhurandhar. Whether Khalnayak Returns lives up to what people remember from 1993 that’s the question that’ll matter when the film actually arrives.
