Marathi films selected for Cannes Film Festival

Four Marathi films will represent Maharashtra at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in France, announced State Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar during a press conference on Sunday. The selections, chosen by a panel of experts from the Maharashtra Film, Theatre and Cultural Development Corporation, highlight the growing global appeal of Marathi cinema.

The films ‘Sthal,’ ‘Snow Flower,’ and ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’ secured official slots, while ‘Juna Furniture’ earned a special screening. Shelar noted that since 2016, the corporation has promoted Marathi films at Cannes’ film market to foster international connections and exposure.

‘Sthal’ delves into the complexities of arranged marriages in rural India, tackling themes like patriarchy, colorism, and societal norms. “Its selection underscores the universal relevance of Marathi storytelling,” Shelar remarked.

Directed by Gajendra Ahire, ‘Snow Flower’ weaves a cross-cultural narrative between Russia and India’s Konkan region, set against the contrasting landscapes of Siberia and coastal Maharashtra. “This film’s unique perspective proves Maharashtra’s stories resonate globally,” the minister said.

‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’ portrays a young boy, Khalid, who faces religious isolation but draws inspiration from historical figure Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shelar described it as a reflection of youth navigating identity in modern society.

‘Juna Furniture,’ directed by and starring Mahesh Manjrekar, explores the struggles of senior citizens and their familial bonds. “Its universal theme of aging deserves the Cannes platform,” Shelar added.

The selections signal Maharashtra’s cinematic talent continues to gain international recognition.
