Dhanashree Verma Opens Up on Divorce, Slams Chahal’s T-Shirt Stunt

MUMBAI: Dhanashree Verma, a renowned choreographer and social media influencer, recently shared her perspective on her divorce from Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal in an interview with Humans of Bombay. The couple, married in December 2020, finalized their divorce in March 2025 at the Bandra Family Court in Mumbai. Their separation, marked by public scrutiny, was amplified by Chahal’s controversial choice of attire during the court hearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with “Be Your Own Sugar Daddy.”

Verma described the emotional toll of the divorce proceedings, revealing she was overwhelmed despite mental preparation. “I was howling in front of everybody,” she said, recounting the moment the verdict was delivered. She noted that Chahal exited the courtroom first, leaving her to face the emotional weight alone. Unaware of his T-shirt until later, Verma learned of the viral images while in her car, still reeling from the day’s events. “Before I even knew about this stunt, I knew people would blame me,” she remarked, addressing the social media storm that followed.

The T-shirt, widely interpreted as a jab at Verma, sparked heated online debates. In response, she quipped, “Are bhai, WhatsApp kar deta,” suggesting a private message would have sufficed. Verma criticized the stunt as painful, emphasizing her choice to maintain dignity amid the controversy. She expressed frustration over societal tendencies to judge women in such situations, stating, “People need to realize you cannot always label a woman.”

Despite the ordeal, Verma remains focused on her career, expressing optimism about future opportunities in choreography and content creation. She also refuted rumors of a ₹60 crore alimony demand, with her family clarifying that no such figure was ever discussed. The couple had been living apart since June 2022, and their mutual consent divorce was expedited due to Chahal’s IPL commitments with Punjab Kings, as confirmed by his advocate, Nitin Kumar Gupta, to ANI.
