The Man Who Brought Villages To The Big Screen: Bharathiraja Dies At 84, Rajinikanth, Vijay, Suriya And Film Fraternity Mourn

Vathalakundu : Tamil cinema has bid farewell to one of its greatest storytellers. Legendary filmmaker and actor “Bharathiraja”, the director who transformed Tamil cinema by bringing rural India and its emotions to the forefront, passed away in Chennai at the age of 84 following age related health complications. His death marks the end of an era that reshaped the language of South Indian cinema.

Tributes poured in from across the film industry within hours of the news. Superstars Rajinikanth, Vijay, Suriya, Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, Allu Arjun, Pawan Kalyan and several others remembered him as a visionary who inspired generations of actors and filmmakers. Rajinikanth, visibly emotional while paying his last respects, said he had hoped to meet his longtime friend one last time.

The Tamil Nadu government announced full state honours for the filmmaker. His final rites were held in his native Theni district, where thousands of fans, industry colleagues and political leaders gathered to bid farewell. A ceremonial 72 gun salute marked his final journey, while the Tamil film industry suspended shooting activities as a mark of respect.

Known affectionately as “Iyakkunar Imayam” (The Pinnacle of Directors), Bharathiraja revolutionised Tamil cinema in 1977 with 16 Vayathinile, a film that broke away from studio bound storytelling and brought authentic village life to the silver screen. Over a career spanning more than four decades and over 40 films, he introduced fresh talents, redefined realism in cinema and created classics that continue to influence filmmakers today.

Born as Chinnasamy in Theni, Bharathiraja’s contribution to Indian cinema earned him numerous honours, including the Padma Shri. Beyond his filmmaking achievements, he was respected as a mentor who opened doors for countless actors, technicians and writers.

His passing comes barely a year after the death of his son, actor Manoj Bharathiraja, adding another layer of tragedy to the family’s recent history.

For millions of movie lovers, Bharathiraja was more than a filmmaker. He was the man who made the soil, people and emotions of rural Tamil Nadu immortal on screen. His films may have ended, but the stories he told will continue to live on.
