Anju Mahendru Pays Tribute to Gary Sobers on July 17 and Rajesh Khanna on July 18

MUMBAI: Veteran Bollywood actress and fashion designer Anju Mahendru could hardly have imagined that a day would come when she would be remembering two of her former partners on consecutive days while speaking to the media.

Anju Mahendru, the niece of legendary music composer Madan Mohan, is now 80 years old. During the 1960s and 1970s, she was in a long relationship with Hindi cinema’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna. Around the same period, she also shared a brief romantic relationship with West Indies cricket legend Sir Gary Sobers. According to several reports, Anju and Sobers were even engaged for a short time. Their relationship became a major talking point in both Bollywood and the cricketing world, although it did not last long.

Anju Mahendru and Rajesh Khanna, popularly known as ‘Kaka’, were together for nearly one-and-a-half decades. However, their relationship eventually came to an end. Rajesh Khanna later married celebrated actress Dimple Kapadia. According to some reports, Rajesh Khanna and Anju Mahendru remained in touch in later years and rekindled their friendship.

Sir Gary Sobers passed away in Barbados on Friday, July 17, at the age of 89. The following day, July 18, marked the 14th death anniversary of Rajesh Khanna, who passed away on July 18, 2012. Anju Mahendru, known for films such as Haste Zakhm, Jewel Thief, Sangharsh and Intaqam, as well as the popular Hindi television serial Kasautii Zindagii Kay, will now remember Rajesh Khanna every year on July 18 and, from the previous day onward, also pay tribute to Sir Gary Sobers on July 17.
