India’s Wholesale Inflation Hits 8.3% In April As Fuel Prices Surge Amid Iran Conflict

India’s wholesale price inflation accelerated sharply in April 2026, reaching 8.3 percent compared to 3.88 percent recorded in March, according to official government data. The sharp increase was largely driven by rising fuel and energy prices linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and tensions in West Asia.

As reported by Reuters and other media outlets, the latest Wholesale Price Index (WPI) data showed the fastest rise in wholesale inflation in more than three years. The increase was significantly higher than market expectations and reflected growing pressure from global energy markets.

Data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated that inflation in the fuel and power category climbed to 24.71 percent in April, up from just 1.05 percent in March. Prices of crude petroleum, mineral oils, petrol, diesel, and natural gas recorded steep increases during the month. Crude petroleum inflation alone surged above 88 percent year-on-year.

Manufactured products also witnessed higher prices, with inflation in the category rising to 4.62 percent. Food inflation moved up slightly to 2.31 percent during the same period.

According to reports by ABP Live, Reuters, The Economic Times, and Business Standard, the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia have disrupted global oil supply chains and increased commodity prices worldwide. Analysts believe that if crude oil prices continue to remain elevated, the pressure could eventually impact retail fuel prices and broader consumer inflation in India.

The rise in wholesale inflation comes at a time when policymakers are closely monitoring global energy markets and their impact on the domestic economy. Economists suggest that continued volatility in crude oil prices may influence future monetary and fiscal decisions in the country.
