DC Co-Owner Urges IPL to Relocate Crucial MI Clash Amid Mumbai Rain Threat

With a yellow weather alert casting uncertainty over Mumbai, Delhi Capitals (DC) co-owner Parth Jindal has called on the Indian Premier League (IPL) to shift Wednesday’s pivotal match against Mumbai Indians (MI) to another city. The high-stakes encounter at Wankhede Stadium, deemed a virtual quarterfinal, could determine the final playoff spot in IPL 2025. A victory for MI would secure their postseason berth, while a DC win would keep both teams in contention, with each facing Punjab Kings in their last league match.

Jindal’s request, detailed in an email to IPL officials, follows the league’s decision to move the May 23 Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) vs. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) match from Bengaluru to Lucknow due to unfavorable weather. Citing this precedent, Jindal argued for consistency, noting that Mumbai’s forecast predicts heavy rain, raising the likelihood of a washout. The Indian Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert the second of four severity levels for Mumbai, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall over the next four days.

In his email, Jindal emphasized that the weather outlook for May 21 has been known for nearly a week, underscoring the need to relocate the match to ensure a fair contest. A washout would result in both teams splitting points, with MI advancing to 15 points and DC to 14, keeping the playoff race tight heading into their final fixtures.

The appeal comes amid broader weather-related concerns in IPL 2025. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore recently expressed frustration to the IPL, highlighting that a new rule granting an additional 120 minutes to complete rain-affected matches was not in place earlier. This rule could have potentially saved KKR’s playoff hopes during their washed-out May 17 match against RCB in Bengaluru.
