Trump Signs ‘Take It Down Act,’ Bans Non-Consensual Porn, Deepfakes

President Donald Trump signed the “Take It Down Act” on Monday (May 19), criminalizing the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, including AI-generated deepfakes. First Lady Melania Trump, a key advocate for the bill, also added her signature in a ceremonial gesture.
In a post on X, Melania stated: “Today, the ‘TAKE IT DOWN’ Act ensures our children’s safety is a national priority. Proud to see BE BEST’s values become law.”
Key Provisions of the Act:
- Makes publishing or threatening to share explicit content without consent illegal.
- Requires social media platforms to remove such material within 48 hours of a victim’s report, including duplicates.
The First Lady had lobbied for the bill in March 2025, calling the exploitation of teens, especially girls, “heartbreaking.”
The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a tech policy group, praised the law as a “critical step in combating AI-generated abuse.”
A Symbolic Gesture
After Trump signed the bill, he urged Melania to do the same, saying, “C’mon, sign it anyway. She deserves to.”
Melania hailed the law as a “national victory,” warning: “AI and social media are like digital candy—addictive and dangerous when weaponized.”
