DOJ Doubles Down: Google Must Sell Chrome Browser

WASHINGTON D.C. – The legal battle between the US government and tech giant Google is far from over, with the Department of Justice (DOJ) doubling down on its demand that Google divest ownership of its popular Chrome web browser. This renewed pressure comes as part of the DOJ’s efforts to address what it sees as Google’s illegal monopoly in the online search market.

Following a 2024 court ruling that found Google’s search engine practices to be anti-competitive, the DOJ under the current administration is reiterating the previous stance of the Trump administration: Google must sell off Chrome. While the DOJ has offered Google some concessions in other areas, the core demand regarding Chrome remains firm.

The DOJ argues that Chrome’s dominance as a web browser gives Google an unfair advantage in the search market. In a statement, the agency asserted that Google’s anti-competitive behavior has created a “goliath” that manipulates the market to ensure its continued dominance. By forcing the sale of Chrome, the DOJ aims to level the playing field, allowing competing search engines a fairer chance to reach internet users.
