Ahmedabad Auto Rickshaw Meters Mandatory; Police Collect ₹1.56 Crore in Fines

Since January 1, 2025, it has become compulsory for auto rickshaw drivers in Ahmedabad to install and use fare meters, following a directive issued by City Police Commissioner G.S. Malik. Despite the mandate, many drivers failed to comply, prompting strict enforcement by city traffic police. So far, penalties totaling ₹1.56 crore have been collected from 28,112 rickshaw drivers operating without functional meters.

Police Commissioner’s Statement

Commissioner G.S. Malik explained the rationale behind the move, stating, “We received several complaints about rickshaw drivers overcharging passengers. Starting January 1, any rickshaw found without a working meter will be fined. On a second offense, drivers will face permit violations and vehicle detention. I urge all drivers and owners to install meters before the deadline.”

He also noted that while rickshaws are supposed to be equipped with meters during annual RTO renewals, many drivers remove them afterward and store them at home instead of using them during service.

Action Taken in Response to Public Complaints

The decision came after numerous public complaints were lodged with traffic authorities regarding overcharging and fare disputes. To address these concerns and improve commuter convenience, the new rule was enforced with a grace period until January 1 for drivers to comply.

Under the new regulation, all rickshaws must be fitted with operational meters, and drivers are required to charge passengers strictly according to the meter reading.
