Mumbai:
In the aftermath of the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, South Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 Indian tourists, tensions have escalated between India and Pakistan. Responding to the heightened threat, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) conducted a comprehensive security review at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

CSMT, the headquarters of Central Railway, is among India’s busiest railway hubs, handling long-distance and suburban trains across its 18 platforms.

Mumbai Railways on High Alert

Given Mumbai’s history of terror strikes notably the devastating 26/11 attacks where CSMT was a target the city’s major railway stations have been placed under maximum security alert. During the review, RPF personnel equipped with bulletproof vests, modern arms, segways, and canine units were seen patrolling the station.

Senior Divisional Security Commissioner Rishi Kumar Shukla stated, “We have enhanced security at CSMT, Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and other major stations by increasing armed deployments. Coordination with the Government Railway Police (GRP) has been intensified, and CCTV surveillance is being made more rigorous. Our personnel have been instructed to stay alert, responsive, and proactive.”

Technology-Driven Safety Measures

Shukla also mentioned that frequent announcements and public awareness drives are being conducted to encourage passengers to report suspicious activities, strengthening the community policing initiative. At CSMT alone, 80 surveillance cameras have been installed. Additionally, a new AI-powered baggage scanner is in the final stages of procurement to further boost security, alongside the adoption of advanced communication systems.
