Pahalgam Terror Attack : Concern from Pakistan, Condemnation from China

The deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed at least 26 people, mostly tourists, on April 22, 2025, elicited varied responses from Pakistan and China. The assault, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot, targeted Baisaran meadow, marking one of the region’s worst civilian attacks since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, as reported voiced concern over the casualties in what it called “Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.” Spokesperson Shafqat Khan offered condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a speedy recovery but avoided labeling the incident as terrorism or explicitly condemning it. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, speaking to Live 92 news channel, rejected allegations of involvement, asserting the attack stemmed from a “home-grown” rebellion against India.
China’s response was more direct. Ambassador to New Delhi Shu Feihong, posting on Twitter, expressed shock and condemned the attack, extending condolences to the victims and sympathy to the injured and their families. Feihong emphasized China’s opposition to all forms of terrorism, aligning with broader international reactions.
The attack, which Indian officials are investigating for possible links to provocative remarks by Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, has intensified regional tensions. Indian authorities, including the National Investigation Agency, are probing the incident, while security forces conduct a manhunt. The responses from Pakistan and China highlight the complex diplomatic dynamics surrounding the Kashmir issue as India grapples with the aftermath.
