Kolkata: CPI(M) leader and senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya’s home in Kolkata was attacked early Thursday morning, with liquor bottles allegedly hurled at the house, damaging window panes and CCTV equipment.
The incident took place around 5 a.m. at Bhattacharya’s residence in Purbalok, under the East Jadavpur police station area. No injuries have been reported so far.
According to CCTV footage cited in reports, a masked man arrived on a motorcycle and allegedly threw bottles at the house. The motorcycle reportedly had its number plate covered, making it difficult to identify the vehicle.
Bhattacharya has alleged that the attack was carried out by people linked to Hindutva groups and claimed it was connected to his criticism of Hindu fundamentalism. He has also said that the attackers issued threats during the incident. Police have not yet confirmed the identity or political affiliation of those responsible.
Bhattacharya has filed a complaint with the police, who are examining CCTV footage and investigating the attack.
The incident has led to a political exchange. BJP MLA Sarbori Mukherjee denied any BJP connection to the attack and condemned the incident, saying those responsible should be treated as miscreants.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also condemned the attack and expressed concern over threats and violence involving members of the legal fraternity.
Bhattacharya, who is also a former Kolkata mayor and former Rajya Sabha member, has said he plans to seek a firearm licence, citing concerns about his security.
Police are now working to identify the attacker and establish the motive. While Bhattacharya has alleged a political connection, there is no confirmed evidence so far establishing that the BJP or any particular organisation was behind the attack.
The investigation is continuing.
