Feeling Sleepy After Rice? Dietician Explains Meal Changes That Can Help

Many people experience drowsiness or lethargy after a rice-based meal. According to dieticians, this response is influenced more by how rice is eaten than by the grain itself.

The experts notes that sleepiness after rice depends on the quantity and type of rice consumed, the cooking method and the foods eaten alongside it. One rice meal may leave a person feeling energetic while another leads to fatigue, showing that the outcome is not fixed.

White rice has a higher glycaemic index than whole-wheat roti. This means it is digested and absorbed more quickly, causing a rapid rise in blood glucose. The body then releases a larger amount of insulin to manage the spike. In a high-carbohydrate, lower-protein meal such as a large portion of rice with little dal or other protein tryptophan can more easily enter the brain. This may subtly increase production of serotonin and melatonin, contributing to feelings of drowsiness.

Roti, by contrast, has a lower glycaemic index and retains more fibre from the bran. It digests more slowly and produces a steadier glucose response, so the energy dip is usually less pronounced.

Portion size and overall meal balance are equally important. A large serving of rice without adequate protein or vegetables is more likely to cause post-meal lethargy. Pairing rice with dal, curd, paneer, eggs, fish or other protein sources, along with fibre-rich vegetables, slows digestion and helps moderate the rise in blood sugar. Eating slowly rather than hurriedly, and avoiding very large midday meals, can also reduce the likelihood of feeling sleepy.

The expert advises against eliminating rice from the diet. Instead, the experts recommends treating it as one component of a balanced plate. When combined thoughtfully with protein and fibre, rice need not lead to the familiar afternoon slump. The key lies in meal composition and eating habits rather than in labelling the grain itself as good or bad.
