14,000 Feet In 29 Seconds: How A Flydubai Flight Was Pulled Back From Disaster

The plane was cruising normally. Then, in just 29 seconds, it plunged nearly 14,000 feet. Inside the cockpit, the captain was badly injured. And somewhere in the cabin, passengers were about to discover that their ordinary flight had become a fight for survival.

Flydubai Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, descended dramatically after a violent confrontation erupted inside the cockpit on September 30.

At the centre of the crisis was Indian captain Smit Machchhar.

Reports say Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot and suffered serious injuries. But even while wounded, he managed to open the cockpit door a decision that allowed others to reach the flight deck at a moment when every second mattered.

Then the cabin crew, passengers and trained pilots became part of an unfolding emergency response.

Two off duty pilots were travelling among the passengers. They stepped forward to assist with flying the aircraft as the situation in the cockpit was brought under control.

Several other passengers also intervened.

Yaniv Hayun, a plumber, entered the cockpit and helped pull the attacker away from the controls. Assaf Rajuan, an insurance agency owner, and Zvika Manes, a banker, also helped restrain the co-pilot, according to reports based on passenger accounts.

But while the struggle was taking place, another emergency was developing just metres away.

Machchhar was bleeding heavily.

Dr Shota Musaev, a dentist travelling as a passenger, rushed to treat him. He provided medical assistance to the injured captain while the others worked to secure the cockpit.

For those aboard the aircraft, there was no single moment when the danger disappeared. The aircraft had already lost a huge amount of altitude, the captain was injured and the cockpit had become the centre of a violent confrontation.

Yet, step by step, control was regained.

The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Flydubai said all passengers were safe and accounted for.

The suspected attacker, identified in reports as the Omani co-pilot, was arrested. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the attack, including its motive. No definitive motive has been publicly established.

Machchhar was taken to hospital in Tabuk and was later reported to be in stable condition.

The passengers eventually continued their journey on another aircraft.

But Flight FZ1073 had already become something far more than a delayed flight.

It became a story of an injured captain refusing to give up control, trained pilots stepping in when they were needed, passengers confronting an unfolding emergency, and a dentist treating a stranger thousands of feet above the ground.

Twenty nine seconds. Fourteen thousand feet. One aircraft. And 174 people who eventually made it safely back to the ground.
