Nushrratt Bharuccha Discusses Bollywood’s Barriers for Outsiders

Actor Nushrratt Bharuccha, recognized for her roles in films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Chhorii, recently spoke about the challenges she faces in securing substantial roles in Bollywood, despite her track record of successful films. In an interview with Shubhankar Mishra, she highlighted the advantages that industry insiders, such as Sonakshi Sinha and Shraddha Kapoor, have over outsiders like herself.

Bharuccha, who debuted in 2010 around the same time as Sinha and Kapoor, noted the stark contrast in their career paths. Sinha launched her career with the blockbuster Dabangg alongside Salman Khan, while Kapoor’s debut Teen Patti was less successful but didn’t hinder her rise. Bharuccha, however, explained that her lack of industry connections limits her access to key opportunities. “They can knock on doors I don’t even know exist,” she said, referring to the ease with which star kids can approach prominent directors.

While emphasizing that she doesn’t resent her peers, Bharuccha acknowledged the practical difficulties of breaking into elite circles without familial ties to Bollywood. She recalled wanting to contact a filmmaker after Pyaar Ka Punchnama’s success but lacked the means to do so until director Kabir Khan facilitated the connection.

Despite these hurdles, Bharuccha expressed gratitude for collaborators like Luv Ranjan, Hansal Mehta, and Vishal Furia, who have repeatedly trusted her talent. Her latest project, Chhorii 2, featuring Soha Ali Khan, was released on Amazon Prime, though it received mixed reviews. Bharuccha remains committed to exploring diverse roles, even as she navigates an industry where networking often determines opportunity.
