Bhavnagar Airport To Host Aircraft Maintenance And Repair Center, Operations To Begin By August 2025

Bhavnagar: For the first time in Saurashtra, the Bhavnagar Airport authorities have granted approval to an aviation company from the city to begin a commercial maintenance and repair center for airplanes. The company has been allotted a dedicated space within the airport premises to carry out these operations, which are expected to commence by August 2025.

Currently, similar Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) facilities exist only in Ahmedabad and Surat. With this new center, Bhavnagar will become the third city in Gujarat, and the first in the Saurashtra region to host such a commercial aviation facility.

In recent times, Bhavnagar Airport has witnessed a steady decline in domestic flight operations, resulting in reduced air activity. In response, airport authorities have been actively exploring alternative avenues to utilize the facility more effectively. As part of this initiative, they have approved a city based aviation company to establish a commercial MRO center.

The company’s Managing Director, Komalkant Sharma, stated that the Airport Authority of India has granted in-principle approval and leased 5,000 square meters of land adjacent to Bhavnagar Airport for the project. The company has already started developing infrastructure, including an aircraft parking bay and a dust-free, air-conditioned hangar. Once operational in August 2025, the center will handle maintenance and repairs for small to medium-sized airplanes with up to 10-ton capacity. The project is expected to create local employment opportunities and revive activity at the otherwise underutilized airport.

Bhavnagar Airport already hosts a flying school on its campus, and the addition of this MRO facility further enhances the city’s growing profile. Known globally for its ship-breaking and shipbuilding industry, Bhavnagar is now poised to make its mark in the aviation sector as well.
